Giving Leisure a Bad Name: Wasting It on the Rich

Giving too much money to too few people has some problems, including these:

  • Very often, the money is not well spent: it is wasted on pursuits that gratify the rich person without adding much to the economy.
  • It makes free time seem like something that few can or should be able to afford, when in fact leisure was the natural state of life throughout most of the existence of the human race.
  • It gives the rich the power to further exploit the poor — taking not only their money, but also their time.

This post offers a brief visual contrast. First, a few notes on the realities of life for low-income people.
